UVA Ranked 7th Most Welcoming School to LGBTQ Students in the Nation

The University of Virginia has been ranked the 7th most welcoming college or university to LGBTQ students in the country.

The Campus Pride Index, an independent national scorecard of optimal practices, put UVA in the superior ten for its LGBTQ-friendly campus experience. It is a dramatic jump for the University, which was ranked 38th last year.

Gary Nimax, who is UVA’s assistant vice president for compliance and chair of the University’s LGBT Committee, said the main reason for the massive leap is that UVA did a more finalize job of self-reporting its services and supports for the LGBTQ community to the Campus Lgbtq+ fest Index.

“I think we did a more thorough job of going through every item to build sure they had all the documentation to back up our answers,” he said. “I believe what was happening was there were a couple of cases where we didn’t get credit.”

UVA earned 4.5 out of 5 stars in the overall Campus Pride Index Score. It ranked such things as LGBTQ policy inclusion, support and institutional commitment, academic experience, student life, housing and residence existence and campus safety.

UVA was also ranked the top universi

Pride Amsterdam is coming: a week for gender non-conforming people full of parties, film screenings, exhibitions, and the iconic boat procession. A good time to take a look at the LGBTQ community at the UvA: what places are there for them? Folia spoke to four organizations, for and by UvA students, that are dedicated to queer people and students. “It’s essential to have a community.”

Lezlinkup is a small organisation created last Summer, for queer women, non-binary and trans* people within and outside of Amsterdam. They organise events where lgbtq+ women, non-binary and genderqueer people can meet each other. Raisa Mulder (22, MA interdisciplinary social sciences) is one of the founders of Lezlinkup, but she doesn’t like to call herself a founder: “Lezlinkup is not mine or anyone’s, it belongs to the whole group. Together, with everyone who goes to events, for instance, we are the face of Lezlinkup. Us, from the organisation, are just here to aid and organise as much as we can”. The Lezlinkup community counts over a thousand of

Local LGBTQ+ organizers are moving full steam ahead on a Queer community center

The Rivanna Area Queer Center, or RAQC (pronounced “rack”), has been a months-long labor of love for area organizers. And while the LGBTQ+ community center isn’t set to reveal until later this spring, the space at 801 W. Main St. is quickly taking shape, entirely through the work of volunteers.

Charlottesville has a myriad of businesses owned by and friendly to the LGBTQ+ community, but committed, intentional spaces are few.

With the closure of the city’s last gay prevent in 2020, gatherings shifted to organized events and Queer-owned/friendly businesses. Even informal community spaces have dwindled in recent years, with the shuttering of staple hangout spots like Umma’s.

Ellie Picard says that after opening Queer makers’ market The Beautiful Idea on the Downtown Mall in 2023 with Senlin Means, the need for a community center was evident.

“Since we opened our store … we’ve planned to work on a collective center and thought about [it] as a long-term project,” says Picard. “Having more physical spaces in the region that are Queer owned, Queer tamed, is absolutely crucial to the vitality and sort of
