Pride month usually takes place in June in the U.S. The month sees a series of marches, parades and other events held to recognize and celebrate the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, neutrois and queer) community.
The celebrations commemorate the Stonewall Uprising in New York Metropolis, which was a critical turning point for the gay liberation movement in the country.
A brief history
The Stonewall Uprising began on June 28 in 1969 after police that evening raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay prevent in the Greenwich Village neighborhood in Manhattan.
Homosexuality at the time was considered a criminal offense throughout New York State, with many gay bars were owned by the mafia and operated without a liquor license, according to the Library of Congress.
Police raids and harassment occurred frequently across the U.S. at the time and members of the LGBTQ community began to combat back amid growing movement in the 1960s.
Stonewall Inn had been raided frequently ahead of the uprising, but the June 28 raid led to a series of demonstrations that lasted six days.

LGBT Pride Month is celebrated every year in June.
The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the riots held by members of the LGBT community against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969.
The so-called Stonewall riots were a "tipping point" for the gay liberation movement in the Joined States, according to the Library of Congress. The uproar also paved the way for the new fight for LGBT rights.
Previous U.S. presidents have, on several occasions, officially declared June as LGBT Celebration Month.

The month honors the Stonewall Uprising of June 1969, one of the turning points for gay rights in the United States. The Stonewall riots came in the wake of a violent police raid on a Manhattan gay club called the Stonewall Inn; protests and clashes lasted for several days after the raid.
A year later—on the anniversary of the Uprising—thousands marched for homosexual rights in the first New York City Celebration March. Over the years, events and commemorations spread to cover the entire month of June, with President Clinton issuing the first “Gay and Female homosexual Pride Month” procla
June is Pride Month, dedicated to promoting equality and public presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual person, and transgender (LGBT) people.
Pride month is an opportunity to promote acceptance, educate on LGBTQ+ history and experiences, raise knowledge of current issues facing the Gay community, and unite to fight against homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia.
To celebrate, our Student Union will be holding a student Pride event on Thursday 17 June, 1pm – 4.45pm, on Discord (a free voice, video, and communicate chat app). This event is unseal to all students, including allies, and will feature:
- Social games and quizzes
- A Pride-themed art contest with prizes
- Role model discuss with trans campaigner Morgan Clark
- Pride virtual fashion show
- Discussion on the history of Pride as a protest
- LGBT role models
We are also flying the LGBT Parade rainbow flags across our campuses to signal our encourage this month.
