The New Gay for Pay

Television conveys dominant messages about sexual identities, and accepted shows such as Will & Grace, Ellen, Glee, Modern Family, and The Fosters are often credited with building support for homosexual rights, including marriage equality. At the same time, however, many dismiss TV’s portrayal of LGBT characters and issues as “gay for pay”—that is, apolitical and exploitative programming created simply for profit. In The New Gay for Pay, Julia Himberg moves beyond both of these positions to investigate the complex and multifaceted ways that television production participates in constructing sexuality, sexual identities and communities, and sexual politics.

Himberg examines the performance stories behind explicitly LGBT narratives and characters, studying how industry workers themselves negotiate processes of TV development, film, marketing, and distribution. She interviews workers whose views are rarely heard, including market researchers, widespread relations experts, media advocacy workers, political campaigners designing strategies for TV messaging, and corporate social responsibility department officers, as well as netwo

‘The New Gay For Pay’ by Julia Himberg

Much has been written about the representation of LGBTQ characters on television because there has been much to write about. However, less examined are the various people behind the creation of these representations. With The New Gay For Pay, Julia Himberg takes a critical eye to the operations behind and beyond the camera which take place in the various offices of media professionals: showrunners, producers, market researchers, public relations experts and political campaigners. Through research and interviews, she breaks down an industry often viewed as a monolith, complicating both contemporary critical and complimentary understandings of it.

The book’s title references the term ‘gay for pay.’ Typically the term is used to refer to straight actors performing in gay pornography and occasionally to allude to companies who are viewed as cynically attempting to appeal to LGBT consumers. Himberg is attempting to twist the term to describe the current situation of LGBT workers in the U.S. television industry which, she argues, is a more fluid space for politics than typically assumed.

The New Queer For Pay is split into four

Chock-full of pop culture references and witty one-liners, Gay for Pay, produced by Gay for Pay Productions in association with Crow’s Theatre, is a one-hour play that touches on ideas of gay inclusion in film in a unique and clever way.

Although not a move show in the urban area, Gay for Pay was a hit at the Toronto Fringe Festival this year, winning Patron’s grab (the best-selling show at their venue for the season), which I possess been dying to notice. It did not disappoint!

Think gay Tony Robbins, pumping up the assumed vertical audience of actors, in a one-hour seminar-like event made to help you win an Oscar by “playing gay”. The two workshop leaders, Blake and Clay, are two male lover actors struggling to discover work, so instead they switch to running seminars on how to authentically ‘play gay’ for linear actors, because well, they are doing it anyway…

In the seven-part seminar, they teach about standard gay characters, moments and sex scenes with nothing but two chairs and a PowerPoint presentation. Blake and Clay tell you that they are proud of you for finally starting to moisturize your confront or for taking your girlfriend to a flamboyant show, but if you want to win an Academy
