International Travel

Travelers can deal with unique challenges abroad based on their real or perceived sexual orientation. Laws and attitudes in some countries may affect safety and ease of travel. 

More than 60 countries consider consensual lgbtq+ relations a crime. In some of these countries, people who engage in consensual same-sex relations may face grave punishment. Many countries act not recognize lgbtq+ marriage.

Research your destination before you travel 

Review the travel advisory and destination information page of the place you plan to visit. Check the Local Laws & Customs section.  This has information specific to travelers who may be targeted by discrimination or violence on the basis of sexual orientation.  

Many countries only recognize male and female sex markers in passports. They do not have IT systems at ports of entry that can accept other sex markers, including valid U.S. passports with an X sex marker. If traveling with a valid U.S. passport with an X sex marker, check the immigration regulations for your destination as acceptance can vary by country.

Lesbian, gay, pansexual and transgender: foreign travel advice

Overview

Attitudes towards lesbian, homosexual, bisexual and gender nonconforming (LGBT+) travellers around the world can be very distinct from those in the UK.

In many countries, LGBT+ people face legal restrictions. Around 70 countries criminalise consensual gay sexual activity. At least 15 countries criminalise diverse gender expression or individuality through cross-dressing and disguise laws.

To shrink the risks, equip well and explore your destination in advance, including legal restrictions and social attitudes.

Before you travel

Always find out about the local laws and social attitudes towards same-sex relationships and gender utterance and identity in the country and area you’re visiting.

In some countries, you may find that cities, or specific areas of cities, are more tolerant, but rural areas are less tolerant. Research everywhere you intend to move, not just at a country level.

Some hotels, especially in rural areas, may refuse bookings from same-sex couples – check before you go.
