Underground SF
A good dive bar needs a few qualities. It should be either dark, quiet, and unobtrusive – the sort of place you drown your sorrows by yourself. Or it needs to be loud, obnoxious, kinda sleazy, utterly unpretentious and a lot of enjoyable – the sort of place you bludgeon your sorrows into submission. Underground SF is the latter.
Relatively small, scruffy, and a small worn around the edges, Underground SF relies on atmosphere, and a firm lineup of rotating parties, to pull the crowds in and keep them coming back. The music runs the gamut from the 60’s and 70’s disco of Monday night’s Vienetta party, to the 80’s bubblegum pop classics of the monthly Hella Tight party. Probably the most notable EDM bedtime is Shelter Tuesdays, the longest running drum and bass night in San Francisco, which has played host to some of the UK’s best DnB acts like Ed Rush & Optical, Bizzy B, Loxy, and Ant TC1.
One of the scant dance clubs in Haight area, the crowds are a fairly diverse mix, and although it tends to lean towards gay and lesbian crowds, there are plenty of straight people dancing and drinking and carousing.

Since 2010, comedian, producer and Oaklandite Charlie Ballard’s Hella Gay Comedy has combined two of America’s favorite pastimes: standup comedy and homosexuality. On June 26th, Hella Gay takes its final bow with the SF Gay Pride All Stars Comedy Show. Yes, it’s in San Francisco, but five out of seven of the comics are Oakland residents, and sometimes it is okay to leave the East Bay. (Just be endorse by midnight, or BART will turn you into a pumpkin). Charlie’s ability to pack a dwelling is incomparable. I was lucky enough to achieve in Hella Gay’s Enormous Dyke Comedy Show and Bad Girlz of Comedy, and I’m thrilled to be in the SF Pride All Stars Present with fabulous comedians Kelly Doyle, Justin Lucas, Sampson McCormick, Zachary Toczynski and Karina Dobbins. I sat down with my comedic colleagues to discuss all things queer, funny and Oakland.
