Marsha P. Johnson was an African American transgender-rights activist, whose work in the 1960s and 1970s had a huge impact on the LGBT community.
At this time, being gay was classified as a mental illness in the Combined States. Gay people were regularly threatened and lost by police, and were shunned by many in society.
In June 1969, when Marsha was 23 years old, police raided a gay bar in Novel York called The Stonewall Inn. The police forced over 200 people out of the bar and onto the streets, and then used excessive hostility against them.
Marsha, who was living and working in New York at the time, was one of the key figures who stood up to the police during the raids.
Marsha resisted arrest, but in the following days, led a series of protests and riots demanding rights for gay people.
News of these protests spread around the society, inspiring others to connect protests and rights groups to fight for equality.

Whilst there are, thankfully, a growing number of prominent LGBT figures across the world from all walks of existence today, when it comes to considering some of the most influential and/or prominent members of the LGBT community over the last 150 years, we have compiled the tracking top ten.
Of course, as always, let us recognize if there is anyone you think we possess missed who should be on the list.
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
Wilde was a noted playwright, poet, and storyteller, known for his brilliant wit, flamboyant style, and tragic imprisonment for “gross indecency” due to his homosexual relationships at a time when it was illegal to be lgbtq+ in the UK. His works, including “The Importance of Being Earnest” and “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” continue to be celebrated for their wit and critique of social norms. Wilde is a symbol of the struggles faced by the LGBT community and the enduring spirit of defiance and resilience. In recent years he has been named as the “most quotable figure” in the history of the English language.

Adult LGBT Population in the United States
This report provides estimates of the number and percent of the U.S. mature person population that identifies as LGBT, overall, as well as by age. Estimates of LGBT adults at the national, state, and regional levels are included. We rely on BRFSS 2020-2021 numbers for these estimates. Pooling multiple years of data provides more stable estimates—particularly at the mention level.
Combining 2020-2021 BRFSS data, we estimate that 5.5% of U.S. adults determine as LGBT. Further, we estimate that there are almost 13.9 million (13,942,200) LGBT adults in the U.S.
Regions and States
LGBT people reside in all regions of the U.S. (Table 2 and Figure 2). Consistent with the overall population in the United States,more LGBT adults live in the South than in any other region. More than half (57.0%) of LGBT people in the U.S. stay in the Midwest (21.1%) and South (35.9%), including 2.9 million in the Midwest and 5.0 million in the South. About one-quarter (24.5%) of LGBT adults reside in the West, approximately 3.4 million people. Less than one in five (18.5%) LGBT adults inhabit in the Northeast (2.6 million).
