We all remember that drawn-out kiss Tom Selleck planted on Kevin Kline in In & Out, right?
There were plenty of people who advised the Magnum PI and Blue Bloods star against taking the role.
‘I was playing a closeted male lover television reporter and a tabloid had said I was gay just a few years earlier,’ Selleck says in the current issue of TV Guide.
But after starring in the box office hit Three Men and a Baby and its sequel, Selleck was keen to accomplish another good comedy and In & Out fit the bill.
It was about midwestern mentor (Kline) who questions his sexuality after a former pupil makes a comment about him at the Academy Awards. The film also starred Joan Cusack, Debbie Reynolds, Matt Dillon and Bob Newhart, among others.
Says Selleck: ‘I said, "I’ve been trying to undertake ensemble comedy forever and this is one of the best ensembles I’ve ever seen." Because I had sued several tabloids for falsely saying I was gay, people were saying I was anti-gay.
‘Playing the role ended both those rumors.’

Tom Selleck's gay rumors
Here's my story:
When I was in college, I was dating a guy whose family owned one of the "Pawnbrokers to the Stars" businesses in L.A.
One night, we had a date, but first, he had a late-evening appointment with a client at their home up in Hollywood Hills. (The guy was a gay hairdresser at one of the studios - un-stereotypically a masculine top, though.) I was going to delay in the car, but my boyfriend told me to come in with him, so that I could meet the guy, whom he also considered a friend. (I reflect he wanted to production me off... lol.)
Anyway, my boyfriend didn't know his friend was hosting a dinner party, so the introduction was short, and I just waited in the entry hall while they went upstairs to quickly do the pawn transaction (Yes, there was a briefcase of cash involved chained to my boyfriend's wrist no less.)
While waiting, I could watch into the dining room area. There were about six men at the table (no women). They were all about mid-30s, same age as their host. I immediately known one of the men as Tom.
The only reason I knew who he was is because we watched Y&R in my house growing up, and he'd had a role on the soap opera from 1974-
Tom Selleck
The man who would spend a decade inextricably linked with bright Hawaiian shirts was born in the decidedly un-tropical town of Detroit, MI. Four years later, Robert and Martha relocated their fresh family to Sherman Oaks, in California's San Fernando Valley. Selleck enjoyed a stable upbringing and excelled in baseball and basketball, harboring dreams of playing professional sports; instead enrolling in business at a local junior college after graduation from Grant Tall School. He was trying to build up grades to transfer to USC when a friend suggested that an acting class would be an uncomplicated "A" on his transcript. With the encouragement of the teacher, Selleck began auditioning for commercials, which he continued to perform even after he was accepted into USC and landed a position on the USC Trojans basketball team. In 1967, just three classes short of graduating with a business degree, Selleck quit USC and signed a tighten with 20th Century Fox. While waiting for that contract to turn him into a star, he joined the National Guard and was scheduled to ship off to contest in Vietnam when the infamous riots broke out in Watts. Selleck was fortunately reassigned to the Los Ange

Tom Selleck Once Sued A Tabloid For Saying He Was Gay
Tom Selleck rose to fame as Thomas Magnum in the 1980s series Magnum P.I. With his tall stature, wonderful looks, and iconic mustache, he sent women swooning.
And while he had never given any indication that he was anything other than heterosexual through the roles he played or his relationships off-screen (including his marriage), that did not stop a tabloid from claiming he was gay.
Never being one to back down from setting rumors straight about himself, Selleck sued the tabloid.
Tabloids get away with making outrageous claims about celebrities for a multitude of reasons. But, one of the biggest is the fact that the publications have very large legal teams.
Because of this, celebrities have to weigh the pros and cons of bringing a lawsuit against publications and the writers given that the case may be tied up in court for a long time and potentially cost a small fortune. Most find that it is not worth it and just hope for the headline to inflate over.
