Debunking the Myth That Lincoln Was Gay
“I’d been active on Lincoln since 1973. But he’s such a profound man with such a wonderful sense of humor, so appealing, so he draws you in. He’s such a brilliant writer. Every story about Lincoln, whether it’s in the oral history, whether it’s something he wrote, it’s always interesting. He’s just an appealing human being. I don’t reflect he was so humble. On the other hand, he wasn’t wildly grandiose. There’s a difference. He was aware of his own greatness.” — Charles Strozier
This week, our featured book is Your Partner Forever, A. Lincoln: The Enduring Friendship of Abraham Lincoln and Joshua Speed, by Charles B. Strozier. Today, for the last day of the movie, we are happy to present an excerpt of Strozier’s interview with Ronald K. Fried at The Daily Beast. Read the interview and accompanying article in full on The Daily Beast‘s website.
[Ronald K. Fried] spoke with Strozier at his Greenwich Village psychoanalytical office. The accompanying is an edited version of [their] conversation.

From The Economist, “Was Abraham Lincoln gay? A controversial documentary [Lover of Men: The Untold Story of Abraham Lincoln (2024)] re-examines the president’s relationships with men”, on-line on 10/1/24 (and in the produce issue of 10/5). An article behind a paywall, but I’m reproducing it here in full (I have a subscription), so that I can, first, express my dismay at the way the label gay is used there and, second, juxtapose this treatment with my precise analysis, originally from 2005, reacting to similarly dismaying discussions of Brokeback Mountain, the story and the film. And add some further material on male friendship, normative masculinity, and male attitudes towards women and femininity.
Meanwhile, I mention that as I document this, I’m wearing this t-shirt —
(#1) Male lover AS FUCK in huge rainbow letters
— fully comprehending that its message is an affirmation of an identity that is both highly localized in occasion and place and social setting, and also a kind of umbrella self, accommodating a wide variety of “gay people”.

Here is my abridged rebuttal of the faux documentary Girlfriend of Men: The Untold History of Abraham Lincoln.
In my opinion the film Lover of Men is a falsification of knowledge about the experience of President Lincoln. I think that the film deceives viewers into believing that Lincoln had sex with a number of men during his life.
The film’s narrators make so many ludicrous statements, which they present as proven facts, but which in truths are nothing more than their silly fantasies, such as “Lincoln has a type, and that type is clearly more diminutive, yes, but manly, dashing, daring,” and that when Lincoln and Joshua Speed first met, it was “lust at first sight!”
Facebook Posts are limited in size, and so I can only address a scant of the film’s claims, but there is very petty it says about Lincoln’s private experience that can’t be shown to be distorted or inaccurate. (My full rebuttal of the clip goes into much more detail and is over three times as drawn-out as this Post.)
1. Sharing a bed.
The film says that Lincoln had sex with Joshua Speed because that they shared a bed in a room above Speed’s store, even though that arrangement was typical for unmarried men in this time and place. Char

Lover of Men: The Untold Story of Abraham Lincoln
A recently released trailer of the documentary explored the private life of Sincere Abe and his relationships before his term as America’s president. Directed by Shaun Peterson it features interviews with historians, scholars and Abraham Lincoln experts.
The documentary claims to search Lincoln's sexuality through written by him to his male lovers. Shaun Peterson asserts he exchanged many ‘love letters’ with a male friend Speed, over four years. Speed was one of the closest friends of Lincoln with whom he

About the film
Lover of Men examines the intimate life of America’s most consequential president, Abraham Lincoln. As told by preeminent Lincoln scholars, historical recreations and never before seen photographs and letters, the film details Lincoln’s romantic relationships with men.
Lover of Men widens its lens into the history of human sexual fluidity and focuses on the profound differences between sexual mores of the nineteenth century and those we hold today. The film fills in an important missing piece of American history and challenges the audience to consider why we hold such a limited view of human sexuality.
Lover of Men is not only an exploration of gender roles and sexual individuality, but also serves as an examination of American intolerance.
