"Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller officially came out as homosexual Wednesday after publicly declining an invitation to be honored at the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in protest of Russia's recently passed anti-gay laws.
"As a gay man, I must decline," Miller wrote in an open explanation on the GLAAD website.
He continued further in his letter to festival director Maria Averbakh.:
Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would create me happy to say yes.
However, as a gay guy, I must decline.
I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of lgbtq+ men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in great conscience participate in a celebratory

Wentworth Miller Comes Out as Gay
Aug. 22, 2013— -- Wentworth Miller is gay.
The former "Prison Break" star, 41, made his announcement in a letter to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, in which he declined an invitation to be a "guest of honor" at the Russian event.
Miller said the reason was because he is "a gay man."
"I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government," he wrote. "The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a nation where people favor myself are creature systematically denied their basic right to live and devote openly."
Miller was referencing Russia's new anti-gay law, which "criminalizes public expression of support for nontraditional relationships," the Linked Press reported.
Originally titled the law on "homosexual propaganda," the act was signed into law by President Vladimir Putin last month. Penalties for breaking the law can be up to $3,000 for individuals and $30,000 for organizations, according to the AP.

Wentworth Miller Reveals, 'I Tried To Kill Myself' for Being Gay

"The first time I tried to kill myself I was 15. I waited until my family went away for the weekend and I was alone in the house and I swallowed a bottle of pills," Miller said in a speech at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Seattle on Saturday, according to a video obtained by TMZ.
"I don't remember what happened over the next couple days, but I'm beautiful sure come Monday morning I was on a bus back to university pretending everything was fine," Miller said. "And when someone asked me if that was a weep for help, I speak no, because I told no one. You only cry for help if you believe there's facilitate to cry for and I didn't. I wanted out. I wanted to go. At 15."
