Dr. Gisela P. Vega is completing her 29th year in higher education. Enthusiastic about diversity knowledge, social justice, mentorship, and addressing issues of access and choice in higher education, her analyze areas include gender and sexuality issues, global human rights, and sexual minorities in higher education.
Dr. Vega is the Director for the LGBTQ Center and adjunct faculty in Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Miami. She served as the inaugural LGBTQ professional at Florida International University’s LGBTQ Initiatives Program, the first of its kind in any south Florida college or university. As adjunct professor with the Center for Women’s and Gender studies, she assisted in establishing the Queer Studies Certificate program. In 2019, Gisela received the National LGBTQ Task Force’s prestigious Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award.
Her ACPA service emerged in the early 90’s, serving as one of the original Beyond Tolerance Roadshow trainers. Vega’s leadership roles in professional organizations span three decades, including LGBTQ Standing Committee Chair. New director of LGBTQ Student Center joins UM
For more than 25 years, Gisela Vega has been a leader and advocate for the queer woman, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. She now brings her extensive personal and professional life, along with a continued pursuit of equality, to the University of Miami as the new director of the LGBTQ Learner Center.
Vega, by way of Chicago, Illinois, received her start in housing and residential life as the resident director at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she encountered many different students from diverse backgrounds. As she gained professional experience and honed her skills and passion, Vega eventually united Florida International University and in 2012 was named associate director of LGBTQA Student Initiatives within Multicultural Programs and Services and was on the faculty for the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies. Vega was instrumental in developing educational and social programs at FIU, and after 22 years of service at the universal institution, she is elated to bring her administration approach to UM.

Founded in 1994 during the presidency of Charles Schroeder, the purpose of the ACPA Educational Direction Foundation (501c3 non-profit organization) is “to enhance the scholar affairs profession and to generate and disseminate knowledge of college students at all levels within higher education” (Article Three of the Articles of Incorporation). The organization is now known as the ACPA Foundation to more concisely communicate its role as the fundraising arm of ACPA College Student Educators International.
The Mission - The ACPA Foundation exists to back the priorities and activities of ACPA by raising funds and developing resources that help the Association fulfill its mission.

This past week, the University of Miami welcomed its new director of the LGBTQ+ Center, Gisela Vega. She’s joining the UM family after being a leader in the South Florida LGBTQ community for over 25 years.
Before coming to Miami, Vega spent her time working as the resident director at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Most recently, she worked as the associate director of Gay Student Initiatives and as a faculty member at the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies at Florida International University.
As a Puerto Rican and Panamanian, Vega has a one-of-a-kind connection with the problems facing the diverse UM community. Accompanying her experiences as a Latina, the personal insights she has as a member of the lesbian community made her a highly competitive candidate for the position.

Dr. Gisela P. Vega who is currently the Director of the LGBTQ Student Center, and an adjunct faculty member in Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Miami. She is completing her 29th years in higher education. She has presented at national and international conferences, countless workshops, and is passionate about diversity education, social justice, leadership development, mentoring, gender & sexuality issues and addressing issues of access and choice in higher education.
She served as the inaugural full-time professional staff member at Florida International University in 2012 developing the LGBTQA Initiatives program, the first program of its kind established in a south Florida College or University. In her most recent role as the Center’s Director, she has worked with staff and colleagues to build the Gender and Sexuality Living Learning Community at the University of Miami. She is also a contributing Author in NACADA’s recent book, Advising Womxn loving womxn, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer College Students.
