Mental health support if you're lesbian, gay, pansexual or trans (LGBTQ+)

Mental health problems such as depression or self-harm can affect any of us, but they're more usual among people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBTQ+).

This may be linked to LGBTQ+ people's experience of discrimination, homophobia or transphobia, bullying, social isolation, or rejection because of their sexuality.

Other things, such as their age, religion, where they dwell, and their ethnicity can combine extra complications to an already difficult situation.

How talking therapy can help

It might not be easy, but getting help with issues you're struggling to deal with on your own is one of the most important things you can do.

Talking with a therapist who's trained to function with LGBTQ+ people may help with issues such as:

  • difficulty accepting your sexual orientation
  • coping with other people's reactions to your sexuality
  • feeling your body does not reflect your true gender (gender dysphoria)
  • transitioning
  • low self-esteem
  • self-harm
  • suicidal thoughts
  • depression
  • coping with bullying and discrimination

It gives us amazing pleasure to officially launch our recent 5-year strategy at GI!

This strategy has been developed from the broad process of consultation and prioritisation with GI’s stakeholders, to which you contributed in late 2023.

We yearn to send a big thank you to all who took the second and effort to share their thoughts, knowledge, ideas and insights with us.  Without that input, our strategy wouldn’t be the considered and robust document it is.

This plan will guide us through the next five years.  As we begin these years, GI – and trans and non-binary people generally - are in the midst of challenging times.

We require our allies now, more than ever.  Everyone has a part to act in helping us achieve our strategic aims – whether that’s amplifying our key messages, raising funds for us, or helping bring our work.

Whether you’re a donor, client, sector colleague, youthful person, partner, funder, parent / carer, participant in any of our services, supporter, any other stakeholder, or a combination of these, I hope you will follow us on our journey and be part of it.
