Oregon schools are required to teach sex education.

Curriculum must be comprehensive but must also promote abstinence.

Curriculum must notice different sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expression.
Curriculum must include instruction on consent.
Parents or guardians may remove their children from sex education instruction. This is referred to as an “opt-out” policy.

Oregon LGBTQIA2S+ School Board Members Advisory Committee

As per OSBA Board Guidelines, the board voted to approve the formation of an LGBTQIA2S+ School Board Members Advisory Committee on September 22, 2023. Katrina Doughty has stepped forward to assist as the liaison between the advisory committee and the Board of Directors. Over the next year, the committee will gather regularly to draft bylaws; identify officers; identify goals that align with the mission, vision, and goals of OSBA; draft deed plans; and draft a budget, all of which will be submitted to the OSBA Board for review. After review, the OSBA Board will vote on submitting a resolution to form an Oregon LGBTQIA2S+ School Board Members Caucus to the membership. The caucus will turn into official after the prosperous passage of the resolution.

The Campus Pride Index provides campuses the opportunity to come out as LGBTQ-friendly and take responsibility for continually improving their LGBTQ campus climate.

Our work supports community tries to reduce youth suicide and other risk behaviors in the often disguised and historically underserved homosexual, lesbian, bisexual, and transsexual youth population. Although the primary focus of OSSCC is sexual orientation and gender identity issues, we recognize the harm caused by harassment, violence, and discrimination of any kind.

ABOUT THE COALITION

The OSSCC seeks a huge and diverse coalition membership in order to create the kind of statewide visibility and support needed to achieve its mission. OSSCC members represent a broad cross-section of widespread and private organizations in Oregon. Membership is uncover to any organization, institution district, agency, faith people, business, or individual that supports the mission of the Coalition. We aspire to collaborate with all organizations and individuals active for a safe and equitable society.

We seek to achieve our mission in three ways:

Education~ Education is crucial to ending prejudice and hate-motivated violence. The OSSCC prepares community members from rural, suburban, and urban areas of Oregon to plan, organize, and present educational work

Supporting GSAs

From the beginning, OSSCC has supported Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) as a way to help students feel protected in school. GSA is a student-initiated and student-run club in a general or private school. The goal of a GSA is to provide a safe, supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer (LGBTQ+) and direct ally youth to assemble and build community, to discuss issues facing the LGBTQ+ community, and to work to create a school environment free of discrimination, harassment, and intolerance. Research shows that all students in a institution with a GSA notice safer than in a school with no GSA.

GSAs are active in many high schools, some middle schools, and even a few elementary schools in Oregon. OSSCC supports existing groups by sharing resources, through a mini-grant program, and by hosting workshops for advisors. We also support the creation of new groups.

Mini-grants
Since 2015, OSSCC has offered mini-grants to GSAs to support club activities. To be eligible for a grant, an activity must be planned, directed and implemented by youth and must hold
