For someone who described himself as ‘a Christ in miniature’ and had inveigled his way into Russia’s imperial court as a much-revered ‘Holy Man’, Grigori Rasputin spent his last day alive indulging in an astonishing amount of debauchery.

That snowy morning of December 16, 1916, had seen him staggering into his St Petersburg flat in the early hours, clearly embracing one of his favourite dictums, that wine was ‘God’s own remedy’.

This was by no means rare according to the police bodyguards who watched over his home on the direct orders of Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Tsarina Alexandra, the last rulers of the doomed Romanov dynasty.

Rasputin can be defined as many things. He was an illiterate Siberian peasant, charlatan, mystic, holy wanderer, faith healer, blasphemer, and notorious lecher. Effectively, Rasputin led an extraordinary and controversial life. His greatest achievement came in winning favor with the closing royal family in Imperial Russia, the Romanovs. His inexplicable ability to soothe the suffering of their hemophiliac child and heir, Tsarevich Alexei Nikolayevich, instantly won him favor with Tsarina Alexandra. The resulting proximity to the throne made him an incongruously powerful and influential figure in the Russian Empire’s final years.

After gaining the confidence of Russia’s rulers with his holy execute of saving their kid, many believed Rasputin transformed them – particularly the Tsarina Alexandra – into virtual puppets. Rasputin in World Heroes

One of the playable characters in World Heroes is Rasputin. He is roughly based on Grigori Rasputin, the infamous 20th century Russian mystic and faith healer. The game’s Rasputin is a 13th century Russian philosopher, alchemist, and sorcerer, according to one Wikipedia page. Other game wikis describe him as “the leader of a pansexual like cult” and demonstrate he was born in the 19th century.

He is often assumed to be homosexual because of his effeminate mannerisms (see image below).

 

He also invites players to spend the bedtime in his Garden of Love.

 

This may be a reference to his exceptional move, called “The Secret Garden” in which he pulls the other fighters (nearly all men) into bushes. Hearts emanate from the bushes. The truth that it only works with male fighters have lead some to offer this as definitive evidence of Rasputin’s sexuality. The video below shows this advance in action.

He eventually gained a reputation as a wandering holy man, drawing followers with his hypnotic gaze, intense charisma, and alleged ability to mend the sick.
