Overview
It's not every day that an inner-city street shuts down for an onslaught of music and fun. No, just Big Gay Afternoon. Now in its 19th year, the annual event returns to The Wickham and the surrounding roadway for an afternoon and evening of music and celebratory mayhem.
Topping the bill is a name that Brisbanites will be more than familiar with: The Veronicas. The local pop duo will be joined by Sheldon Riley, Emily Williams, Maribelle, The Marion Cranes, Being Jane Lane, a heap of DJs and the Big Gay Extravaganza — which'll feature more than 30 drag performers.
Consider them the icing on the cake on what has proven the city's most colourful and diverse street festival for the past 18 years, and will continue to perform so again in 2019. Roving carnival acts, multiple performance spaces, food trucks, themed bars and plenty of partying people are also on the agenda, as is raising funds for six charity partners that help the LGBTQIA+ community.

Topping the bill is a name that households across the globe will know: Mel C. You know, the one from one of the biggest girl groups ever — the Spice Girls. She'll be performing with her band of queenly performers, Sink The Pink. You'll also catch Indigenous Australian electronic duo Electric Fields; bubble gum punk duo Cry Club; hip hop and roots collective The Regime; local behave Being Jane Lane; indie folk artist Julia Rose; a heap of DJs and drag performances.
It's proven to be the city's most colourful and diverse street festival for the past 19 years, and will continue to be so again in 2020. Brisbane-born pop duo The Veronicas have been announced as the headliners of this year’s Big Queer Day street festival in Fortitude Valley.
The event, now in its 19th year, will take over The Wickham on Sunday, March 10 and transform the neighbouring street into an inclusive festival to raise cash for six local LGBTIQ organisations.
Joining The Veronicas on this year’s lineup is The Voice actor Sheldon Riley, Melbourne artist Maribelle, Aussie songstress Emily Williams, synth-pop duo The Marion Cranes and punk band Creature Jane Lane, all performing on the main stage hosted by Paul Wheeler.
As well as musical acts, Big Queer Day will also stage a unique drag extravaganza featuring over 30 local drag stars. DJ Kitty Glitter, DJ Harry K, DJ Jamez Brown, DJ DZYR, DJ ENN and DJ Vincible round out the festival’s entertainment lineup.
This year, six diverse local charities hold been chosen as recipients of the money raised at Big Gay Day: the Australian Trans person Support Association Queensland, the Queensland AIDS Council, Brisbane Self-acceptance, Open Doors Youth Service, counselling service Diverse Voices and the LGBTI Legal Service.

Brisbane’s Big Gay Day festival will return to Fortitude Valley venue The Wickham Hotel in March.
The festival, now in its 19th year, will take over the Wickham and convert neighbouring Alden St into an inclusive street festival on Sunday, March 10.
A host of local and international performers will receive to Big Gay Evening main stage as the event raises money for local LGBTIQ organisations.
The Huge Gay Day team said they’re aiming to increase $40,000 this year, to top the more than $30,000 that was raised for local LGBTIQ groups in 2018.
This year, six diverse local charities own been chosen as recipients of the money raised at Big Gay Day: the Australian Transgender Encourage Association Queensland, the Queensland AIDS Council, Brisbane Movement, Open Doors Youth Service, counselling service Diverse Voices and the LGBTI Legal Service.
As well as dwell music, Big Gay Diurnal will also welcome DJs, drag performers and road entertainers. Acts are organism announced through Big Homosexual Day’s social media channels over the coming weeks, and organisers have promised the festival’s major lineup announcement is coming soon.
