What is a hate crime?
A hate crime is any offense committed against you or your property because of your race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, disability, gender or sexual orientation. Anybody can be a victim. White, heterosexual males can be victims, as can African-American women. The language of the statute is very broad and protects everyone, not one particular group.
To qualify as a dislike crime, bias against you need not be the only reason you were attacked, as long as it was a substantial factor in the criminal’s selection of you as a target.
Also, it does not matter if you are a member of the team that your attacker thinks you are, only that your attacker perceives you to be a member of that group. If someone hits you because he thinks you are Hispanic, but you are White or Native American, you are still a victim of a animosity crime. If an attacker beats up your companion thinking your friend is gay, but your ally is actually straight, your friend is a victim of a hate crime. Law enforcement can prosecute the criminal for the hate crime without waiting for him to strike again.

George Dunlop passed away peacefully in Regina, Sask. with his three children by his side.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lyle and Verna Dunlop and a younger sister, Allison MacDougall. He is survived by his sons, Brad (Heather) and Lyle; his daughter Kristin (Steve); and six grandchildren Andrew, Everet, Bennett, Alex, Oliver, and Isabele. Also surviving him are his three sisters, Fran, Beryl, and Barb; three brothers, Bob, Tom and Jim; along with numerous nieces and nephews. His passing will leave a void in the lives of his family, friends and coworkers who knew him well.
Born in Mossbank, Saskatchewan and growing up on the family farm, George realized at a young age that he needed to see the world. George joined the military at age 18, in 1969 and served his first 9.6 years as an infantryman with the First Battalion Queens Own Rifles of Canada and the Third Battalion Princess Patricia Canadian Illuminated Infantry. He changed trades in the military in 1978 and became a Mobile Support Equipment Operator which he continued until his retirement from service in 1995 for a 26-year career.

Toxic Words of Ignorance
One of my classroom management strategies is the collaborative construction of the words of ignorance. Ask the students to work in groups to name the derogatory words used to describe distinct groups of people. Detect these words as The Words of Ignorance”. Have the students make a poster and put it up in your room. You will not perceive these words in your room and I listen it reduces usage in other venues because oftentimes, people do not understand what they actually mean.
